Since the book deals with diplomats, a question arises from the very beginning: what is a diplomat? The author mentions a few opinions (including that of Hitler!) to which I would like to add, in order to complete the wide range of perceptions, that of the French diplomat Jules Cambon who, in 1925, stated: "I know of no other more complex activity than the profession of diplomat. In any case, there is no other profession with so few precise a rule and so much based on tradition, which requires so much perseverance in order to succeed and in which success depends largely on haphazard and harsh discipline is so necessary and which demands of its practitioners a so firm a character and so independent a spirit". The world in which Mr. Alexandru Popescu's work introduces us - and I mean, first of all, the 'Romanian world' of 'diplomats-spies', but not only - is still one full of secrets, 'heroes' and 'traitors', 'friends' and 'enemies', in which no other person, not even the holder of some power at a certain time, but history shall have the last word. Let us have faith in it!

The main interest of the work written by Mr. Alexandru Popescu, author of several studies on the Romanian history from a universal perspective of the cultural, diplomatic, espionage relationships, published in our country and abroad, lies in approaching a significant field of contemporary history, with direct repercussions on the existence of nations, of international contexts. Equally addressing experts and the public at large and being the first contribution of this kind in our country, the work is meant to satisfy, based on an extensive biography and several original documents from Romanian and foreign archives, the knowledge of causes, contexts and consequences of the involvement of diplomats all over the world, ever since the Antiquity up to contemporary times, therefore, from a universal perspective,in informative, intelligence activities.
